Strategy 1: INSERT
The students were in the beginning of writing an essay and there were multiple people in groups. They were suggested to first figure out their thesis. In order to write their thesis, they needed to read their sources. I provided them with the INSERT (interactive notation system to effective reading and thinking) method. This way, the students could keep track of what information helped prove their position using check marks, plus and minus signs in the margins.

Strategy 2: Cornell Notes
I use this strategy with a lower level English group because the students needed more help understanding the sources and what information was going to be important in defending their position. With this in mind, I showed them how to use Cornell notes to provide them with more structure. On one side I had them write phrases or reasons of their position and on the other side they would find proof in the sources and cite it from the text.

Strategy 3: Semantic Map
Quickly, before the class began, the teacher allowed me to teach the class for 15 minutes on writing an argumentative paper. I used a semantic map on the board to see what the students already knew and provide them with a visual aid that they could use as reference. After that was complete, I provided them with steps on how to write an argumentative piece and what things they needed to be sure to include.
